Hide & Seek

Have you ever-played hide and seek with a child? You hide the come and find you and vise versa. Now have you ever played it with a baby? With a baby they can’t go hide so instead you hide an object under a blanket or something. I played this game with my baby cousin when he was 4 months old. He would watch me hide the object and then not have a clue as to where it went. I recently was playing it with him and he is now 9 months. This time when he watched me place the object behind the blanket he realized the object was gone and actually tried to find it this time. The reasoning for this is that now that my cousin is 9 months old he has reached the sensorimotor stage that allows him to find a hidden object, and he now knows object permanence.

  1. Kersten, this is a cute story. I have enjoyed doing the same when my kids and grand-kids were younger. It is amazing how children develop and how some develop earlier or later than others. Cognitive skills become more developed each day, although we my not recognize it as a caregiver. I had times when I did not notice my children had learned something new and some else, an acquaintance or friend, would notice and say, "When did he start doing that?". I would then think about it and remember it was just a few days ago, but I guess I was just accepting of the progress. I do not believe it was because I was not interested, I believe it was because it was gradual process for me.

  2. I think every child I know has been introduced to the game of Peek-a-boo. This is a baby's form of hide and seek. They are so excited when a face reappears from behind a set of hands. It is so simple, yet so stimulating for a baby or small child. I had never heard the words object permanence until this class. I am listening and learning about all of these developmental stages and looking back to see that my girs, who are now grown, fit right in to these stages.
